Decision Fatigue Is the New Burnout (+ The Truth About Your Business Lag) Shamelessly Ambitious Podcast – Episode 179

Filed in All Episodes, Connection, Emotional Intelligence, Motherhood, Unconventional Living — March 19, 2026

We’ve talked about burnout before.

We’ve talked about high-functioning women.
We’ve talked about nervous system regulation.

But today, we’re getting more specific.

Because what most women are calling burnout right now?

It’s actually decision fatigue.

And if you’re an entrepreneur, this one is especially important — because decision fatigue doesn’t just impact your energy.

It impacts your business.

What Is Decision Fatigue?

Decision fatigue happens when your brain is forced to make too many decisions, too often, without adequate recovery.

Not just big decisions.

Micro-decisions:

  • What should I post?
  • Should I pivot?
  • Is this working?
  • Should I rest or push?
  • What should I eat?
  • Should I respond now?
  • Is this urgent?

When your brain never stops scanning, evaluating, and course-correcting, it becomes overwhelmed.

And overwhelmed brains create emergencies.

How Decision Fatigue Turns Into Burnout

High-functioning burnout doesn’t always come from doing too much physically.

It comes from carrying too much mentally.

You may have:

  • A color-coded calendar
  • A solid morning routine
  • Time blocked perfectly

But if your mind is spiraling through false emergencies all day long, you will still burn out.

Decision fatigue creates a constant internal state of:

“Something is wrong. I need to fix it.”

And that emergency mode is what exhausts your nervous system.

The Problem With Living in Emergency Mode

Let me be clear.

An actual emergency dysregulates your body for a reason.

But when you treat:

  • A low-performing post
  • A slow launch
  • A future financial fear
  • A potential tax bill
  • A school decision
  • A hypothetical outcome

…as emergencies?

Your nervous system cannot tell the difference.

And when everything feels urgent, you stop making wise decisions.

You start reacting instead of responding.

You start solving problems that don’t even exist.

The Truth About Your Business Lag

Here’s the piece most entrepreneurs forget:

Your business today is responding to what you did 30, 60, or 90 days ago.

Marketing has a lag.
Trust has a lag.
Visibility has a lag.
Momentum has a lag.

If your revenue is slow this month, it may not be because of what you’re doing today.

It may be because of:

  • What you stopped doing 60 days ago
  • What you weren’t consistent with 90 days ago
  • What you planted — or didn’t plant — last quarter

When you forget this, you create emergency reactions:

  • Burning down offers too quickly
  • Pivoting too fast
  • Overhauling strategy impulsively
  • Second-guessing solid work

And instability compounds instability.

Consistency compounds growth.

False Emergencies Are Draining You

A potential $30,000 tax bill is not the same as a confirmed $30,000 tax bill.

A child exploring school options is not the same as catastrophe.

A slow week in business is not proof of failure.

When you live inside hypotheticals, your brain operates as if danger is present.

And you cannot build sustainably from fear.

Regulation Is the Real Flex

If you feel overwhelmed right now, the solution is not more strategy.

It’s regulation.

Before you:

  • Pivot
  • Burn something down
  • Rewrite the offer
  • Change your pricing
  • Make a massive life decision

Ask yourself:

Am I regulated?
Or am I tired and over-deciding?

Because tired brains create problems that regulated brains never would.

Decision Fatigue vs. Being Overwhelmed

Sometimes you aren’t overwhelmed by your workload.

You’re overwhelmed by:

  • Mental noise
  • Hypothetical scenarios
  • Internal second-guessing
  • Emotional dysregulation

Your brain is tired.

That doesn’t mean your business is broken.

What To Do Instead

  1. Zoom out.
Look at 90-day patterns, not daily fluctuations.
  2. Reduce unnecessary decisions.
    Simplify where you can.
  3. Regulate before reacting.
    Calm body first. Strategy second.
  4. Remember what’s true.
You cannot solve a problem that does not exist.

Your business is not an emergency.

Your life is not an emergency.

You are not behind.

You are likely just over-deciding.

And that, my friend, is fixable. your connection with your body’s natural rhythms..
