You know that feeling when you finally get the thing — the income, the clients, the business you dreamed about — and instead of feeling free, you feel… cautious?
That’s not gratitude. That’s not being “grounded.” That’s success anxiety. And it’s one of the sneakiest ways high-achieving women start playing smaller right when they should be going bigger.
In Episode 181 of the Shamelessly Ambitious Podcast, I’m getting real about something I’ve been sitting with — both personally and with my clients. Because the conversation keeps coming up, and I think it needs to be said out loud: success can shrink us if we’re not paying attention.
The Golden Cage Is Real
I had a client recently who reflected on how free she felt when she was just starting out — a beat up car, a few thousand dollars a month, total reckless confidence. She was trying everything. She wasn’t afraid. And now? She’s making tens of thousands a month, she has everything she wanted, and she feels… careful.
That’s the Golden Cage. The bigger the gold, the more it can start to feel like a cage — unless you’re actively, intentionally choosing to stay brave.
Your Nervous System Doesn’t Know You’re Successful
Here’s the thing nobody talks about: your nervous system doesn’t care how far you’ve come. It doesn’t see the revenue, the testimonials, the brand you’ve built. All it sees is what can be lost. And the more you have, the more it perceives threat.
Success raises your perceived stakes. It increases your identity attachment — to your income, your brand, your reputation. And when your identity is wrapped up in something, your brain will work overtime to protect it. That protection shows up as hesitation, over-thinking, playing it safe, perfectionism. All of it disguised as being “strategic.”
This Is Your Upper Limit
If you’ve read The Big Leap by Gay Hendricks, you know exactly what I’m talking about. He calls it the Upper Limit Problem — this invisible ceiling we hit when things are going well, and we unconsciously find ways to bring ourselves back down to what feels safe and familiar. It shows up as self-sabotage, second-guessing, delaying, bringing the wrong energy to your best opportunities.
It’s not weakness. It’s wiring. But it can be rewired.
But First — A Quick Detour Worth Taking
Before we go further, I have to mention something. If high-functioning burnout is something you’re navigating alongside all of this — and let’s be honest, for most ambitious women it absolutely is — you need to listen to my episode on the Happily Hormonal Podcast with the incredible Leisha Drews.
Leisha is a colleague, a former client of mine, and someone I’ve been a client of for years — which tells you everything about the level of trust and respect between us. On her show, we dig into what high-functioning burnout actually feels like, why your body adapts to stress so well that it starts to feel completely normal, and I share the exact nervous system framework I used with Leisha in our one-to-one work together. It’s practical, it’s real, and you’ll walk away with something you can use immediately.
You can also go back and listen to Episode 173 here on Shamelessly Ambitious where Leisha came on my show — it’s an exceptional episode and she is a wealth of knowledge, especially if you care about your hormones, your health, and your overall wellness as a woman. Links to both are below.
The Beginner Mindset Is the Cure
When you’re a beginner, you’re fearless because you have nothing to protect. You try things. You fail without it meaning anything about who you are. You’re excited, scrappy, bold.
The most important thing you can do at your next level of success is remember what that felt like — and choose it again. Not naively, but intentionally. Separate real risk from ego threat. Loosen your grip on the identity you’ve built. Build something stable, yes — but not so stable you become afraid to evolve.
The takeaway?
The next level isn’t just about doing more or building more. It’s about staying brave once you have something to lose. That tenacious, unapologetic woman who started this thing? She’s still in there. Call her back in.
